Fireplace Restoration

How It Works
A detailed inspection checks structural soundness, veneer loss, soot staining and joinery faults. We document original details and recommend in‑situ or workshop restoration with a clear scope of work.
Why Choose Fireplace Restoration?
Four decades of family craft
Forty years of continuous, family‑run workmanship means an eye for period detail and the patience to revive historic mantels without erasing character.
Traditional finishes, modern care
Specialist French‑polish and shellac techniques recreate original depth and colour while using conservation‑minded methods to protect fragile veneers and joins.
Bespoke, domestic-friendly service
Workshop restoration or careful in‑situ work to suit your home — minimal disruption, tidy working practices and clear guidance on maintenance and heat‑safe use.
What we restore: wooden fireplace surrounds, mantel shelves, overmantels and applied mouldings. Work ranges from gentle cleaning and soot removal to full refurbishment — veneer repair, re‑mitring, dovetail or dowel repairs, and consolidation of collapsed softwood subframes. The approach is always to retain and conserve original fabric where possible, matching grain and profile when replacement is necessary.
How we finish: we favour traditional shellac French polishing for fine antique mantels to recover depth and sheen, and matched lacquer or wax finishes for later or painted surround styles. Small repairs and touch‑ups are colour‑matched on site or in our workshop; larger pieces are carefully removed for controlled restoration. Every finish is hand‑rubbed and finished to complement your interior, with advice on maintenance and cleaning to keep the mantel looking its best.
